Because cleansing prepares the surface. When oil and buildup remain along the pore wall, each layer placed after must push harder. I began with a treatment room, palms on skin, studying one face at a time. That base never leaves me. Viewing skin closely, day by day, shows that terms like dry or oily reveal almost nothing. Pores act one way across the forehead and differently across the cheeks. Sensitivity shifts with seasons and stress. Breakouts pass through phases. I continued to ask, what does this skin truly require, right now.

Thirty years ago, I launched this business with a treatment room, a belief that knowing your skin type could change everything, and a readiness to keep studying. I stay in motion and test everything. Staying highly solution oriented is what sets me apart. I exist to serve them, and I have always viewed it that way. I truly love what I do and I believe I love what I do now more than ever. I can not ever picture myself not doing it.

Your blog became your number one marketing strategy through organic search, and you were noted as the first esthetician based company to offer virtual skin consultations, how does teaching in plain language relate to the plants and acids inside the bottles?

Instruction forms the second half of the formula. A bottle only performs as hands permit. When someone applies too much, too often, even fine ingredients disappoint. So I compose as I speak inside the treatment room. How to cleanse. How long to keep a masque. How to distinguish dryness from dehydration.

TikTok and Amazon costs now shape what a serum costs

A September 30, 2026 comparison from Dashboardly laid out what TikTok Shop and Amazon each cost sellers, and neither channel came out cheaper in every case. The work showed margin depends on the exact product, the way it ships, the promotion behind it, and the period measured. Sellers were advised to line up those four factors before judging either platform.

Anyone who reads a label will notice the shift first on a phone screen. TikTok Shop allows brands to sell through affiliated creators in videos, livestreams, and profile shops. Merchants choose payout rates from 1% to 80% and can tailor rates to a single creator or a single campaign. Stepped structures permit a stronger opening rate or a higher rate after a creator passes defined sales thresholds.

Those creator payments rest on platform charges. TikTok Shop charges platform fees near 6%, a cost merchants must build into commission decisions. Flat arrangements can pair an advance of $20 to $10,000 with added commissions tied to performance. Shipping brings one more decision, between handling parcels directly or using Fulfilled by TikTok, while Amazon asks for a parallel choice between merchant handling or Fulfillment by Amazon.

Affiliate promotion now drives close to 10% of online retail sales in the United States, or $113 billion, based on a 2025 study from The Performance Marketing Association. Donte Murry, TikTok group vertical director, said in an interview with Glossy that 77% of users look up the item they just noticed in TikTok affiliate posts. MySmile passed $1 million in TikTok Shop sales in its first three months by working with affiliate creators.

Amazon delivers broad search volume, yet its history with imitations calls for care. In April 2023 NOW Foods found 11 separate counterfeit NOW supplements offered on Amazon by one seller. During that same month Fungi Perfecti found 23 separate sellers on Amazon offering counterfeits of its Host Defense mushroom supplements. In August 2023 a fake version of Bausch + Lomb’s PreserVision AREDS 2 Eye Vitamin and Mineral supplement was sold on Amazon.

Later episodes extended the record. In September 2023 fake versions of Pure Encapsulations L-glutamine and NatureMD’s GutConnect 365 were found for sale on Amazon. A suit was brought in November 2023 against several parties accused of selling counterfeit Prevagen on Amazon. In October 2024 Fungi Perfecti prevailed in a suit that bars JT Best Deals from marketing or selling Fungi Perfecti products.

Laboratory results explain why this formula deserves attention. NOW Foods testing showed fake supplements held capsules packed with plain rice flour, and some specimens carried traces of sildenafil. Fungi Perfecti imitations held undeclared gluten and soy, two substances missing from authentic Host Defense products. Under the U.S. Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, the FDA neither reviews nor approves supplements ahead of sale.

Amazon said it will stop commingling practices through its supply chain as of March 31, 2026, though the change covers only incoming inventory. An Amazon spokesperson said Amazon holds a zero tolerance policy for counterfeit products. The next signal will be less visible than a debut. Look at the seller name and assume labels now carry creator costs in the retail price.

I would say that 99 percent of people never answer your emails unless you know someone. Labs were no different. When we asked for varied panels, we heard it would add 20,000 dollars. That shows you what the usual path was. We had no traditional VC funding, so it has really been about tinkering and learning what works, versus pouring a million dollars into ads and watching what happens.

Most botanical shelves ask for more. More extracts, more layers, more shine by morning. KraveBeauty chose the opposite path and stayed there.

Liah Yoo arrived at formulation as a video maker and as a person with worn, reactive skin. She had spent time at AmorePacific, posted on YouTube since 2011, and tested strong treatments, antibiotics and piles of medication for breakouts. Her skin stayed oily, sore and easily upset. The shelf filled up. The comfort stayed thin.

Appreciate you tracing us that carefully. I wanted Then I Met You to carry its own distinct brand story. The reason we avoided beginning under a Soko Glam brand name is that I wanted Soko Glam to stand on its own two feet. I will never leave the Soko Glam curation. We enjoy collaborating with our partners, our labels. We share a truly warm relationship with them.

So we opened with only two cleansers, a Living Cleansing Balm and a Soothing Tea Cleansing Gel, together forming the ideal cleansing pair. For the initial full year we traded solely through our own site. I have evaluated hundreds and thousands of products across the years, seeing steady invention plus talking with manufacturers and chemists ready to share and create with me. I wished this range to validate itself one ritual at a time, without borrowed visits. That calm beginning allowed jeong to form organically between us and the community.

From Cult Beauty in 2021 to Space NK online and 33 stores in 2024, including Manchester Trafford Centre, you grew with care. What guides where you settle and root next.

Attention guides us. I have not measured it yet, truthfully. I simply wish to ensure we truly, carefully direct expansion. Every retail partner has to love the ritual and promise to show it by hand.

Entry at Cult Beauty introduced us to a crowd already fluent in ingredient lists. Our physical debut in the UK at Space NK, online and across 33 shops, with a gondola at the newest Space NK shop in Manchester Trafford Centre through December, allowed people to test texture before purchase. In December 2014 Susanne Norwitz traded speechwriting for formulating and founded Maya Chia in Charleston, South Carolina. It sits in nearly every kit because it meets the complaint we hear most, which is dryness that refuses to ease.

Our range, refined and gracious, is meant to help you look and feel wonderful. That intention was conscious. People said the sensitive skin options they had tried felt oily, scented or unhelpful. We wanted a cushion that protects, yet with a finish suitable for daily use. I understood I could not proceed solo, so in formulating Lindi Skin products, we joined with dermatologists, oncologists, nurses, patients and skincare formulators to create products that can treat even the most sensitive of skin. Every participant had a role. The physicians addressed safety through chemotherapy and radiation. The nurses addressed everyday care at the bedside. The patients addressed touch, aroma and dignity. The formulators helped us render all of that into lasting formulas.

Our formulas are singular, mild, and calming. We choose fine ingredients for deep and lasting hydration. We would rather invest in distinctive formulas than in vessels or promotion. That priority held us steady. We had no interest in relabelling standard formulas. Target brought reach, yet the products needed to feel identical in a distant store and on our site. The wash still had to foam with one to two pumps. The ointment still had to feel rich from jojoba esters.

We have kept launches to two to three formulas yearly across five years, so the total sits near 15 products, which counts as a very compact shelf for a skincare label in particular. We only build where we sense true need.

That limit allows study of one plant or one concern at a time. We avoid overlap. We ask where hand feel or fit could improve. Faded Dark Spot Patches grew from that prompt. A patch with tranexamic acid that rests on a post breakout mark for six hours. It helps soften the appearance of one fixed spot while you sleep or work. The peel pads grew from the same notes. You pitched for two years to raise your first round, with support from Issa Rae, Yvonne Orji and Bozoma Saint John. What did that slow raise plant inside you?

As a Black woman, I felt proud to reach a point where our company drew strong interest. The road took time. We pitched for two full years before closing 2.6 million dollars. The brand raised 2.7 million and sold out within hours of launch.

Our parents feared the start up route carried risk, yet we told them the work of building Topicals would strengthen any later med school essay. That memory still makes me smile. We stepped away from medicine but retained its method. Test, observe, record. Retail stays very difficult because costs run high. So we stayed lean. Few blends, plain claims, active community. You do not have to be everything to everyone, but you must be everything to one. Our one is Gen Z with ongoing concerns across all tones, especially deeper tones left aside too long.

You moved from a founder run brand to a small holding company with the Bread Beauty Supply acquisition. What stays grounded as the team grows past 40 people?

The customer remains. The compact shelf remains. The testing order stays the same, deepest tones first. Sochi Mbadugha as president and Julia Shao as creative director help carry both care and voice as we scale.

Revenues grew threefold in 2021, and we sold one product every minute in 2022. In 2022 we closed our Series A, and at 26 I became the youngest Black woman to raise past 10 million, with total funding near 20 million. Scale can tempt a brand toward endless variety. We return to known ground. Ongoing concerns. Fewer, stronger formulas. Aluminum that feels pleasant in hand. Teaching that honors ingredient lists. The first thing a customer told Alli Reed about Liquid Gold was not about ceramides. It was about the slip under her palms in the morning, the pale yellow in the pump, the way it sank without shine. In 2018 you told Refinery29 that you once told someone to simply wash with body wash and a loofah in the shower. What shifted when your own skin turned difficult in your early twenties

To be candid, much of this feels like making up for how clueless I used to be. As a kid I had clear skin, and that was pure genetics rather than care. So my guidance when friends asked was worthless. Then my early twenties arrived and all that neglect finally showed.

Once I care about a subject, I approach it like a researcher. I have always loved science. As a small child I hoped to become a paleontologist, later an astronomer, and in college I settled on chemistry. So I studied everything available: what truly drove the skin issues I noticed, and which topical ingredients and bases might actually influence them. Strong evidence exists for what helps skin and what fails. The problem in shops was that labels only told me what marketing teams chose to share. That mismatch is really what Stratia grew out of.

Before Stratia began you spent time on Reddit skincare forums and shared formulas on your blog, The Acid Queen, sending extra product from your own batches to readers. What did you learn from that community

Reddit holds groups where, if you wish to follow research deeply, excellent threads await. I belonged actively to those groups before I ever considered blending my own skincare, let alone offering it for sale. There I met a small circle of people mixing products at home in a methodical way. Less mashing fruit for a mask, and more sourcing small quantities of propylene glycol.

That hobby suited me. I missed bench time. Where some friends find joy in preparing a complex dinner, I found it in studying a base, compounding it, applying it to my face and watching it perform. When batches left extra, I posted them to readers, and requests for refills kept coming.

The group showed me what matters to users and what tone they prefer. When selling began, the lineup truly aimed to answer a need members had named.

In 2023 you told The Quality Edit that a peptide is like a little Lego tower, carried in Interface by microscopic taxi cabs. That same gel cream also holds licorice root extract, rosehip seed oil and two olive derived emulsifiers. How do plants belong inside a peptide formula

Peptides fascinate me. A peptide is only a brief string of amino acids, like a little Lego tower, and the possible versions are nearly endless. Interface contains seven. Several were selected to support visible firmness and bounce, and several target central proteins in the moisture barrier. The active peptides rest inside a skin compatible shell, and the shell carries escort peptides, which behave like microscopic taxi cabs, guiding actives toward the receptors where they belong rather than scattering elsewhere.

Botanicals act as the ensemble, and I offer that description with respect. Licorice root extract supports brighter, calmer looking skin. Rosehip seed oil supplies linoleic and linolenic acid. My boundary follows function rather than origin. Many present “free from” trends push companies to remove loads of safe and useful ingredients. Attention shifts away from contents toward absences, so shoppers receive fragrant water.

So I omit familiar irritants that offer skin no benefit. Scent tops that list. Essential oils join it, and that reflects no judgment of botany. It reflects judgment of perfume, which gives the barrier nothing and ranks among the likeliest triggers for sensitive faces. At the same time we keep silicones with pleasure, since they are safe and effective. Our parabens serve as a safe, mild and reliable preservative, and every water based formula requires preservation.

Stratia likely might have earned far more by chasing fads. Yet I aim only to create products that perform. A strong product is designed to work, feel refined and stay safe. Plant based is absent from those criteria, as is lab made.

Liquid Gold arrived in May 2016, an original formula based on studies you had read about a specific ratio of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids. Your first release was eight bottles. Why shape a first product around a ratio instead of a hero ingredient

Since the proportion creates the effect. The moisture barrier resembles bricks and mortar. Flattened cells form the bricks, and a fatty blend of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids forms the mortar. Once that mortar weakens, skin may turn dry yet oily, highly reactive, or breakout prone. Published work showed these three fats acting together, in balance, which suits copying and strengthening the natural barrier.

And that balance was scarce in stores. A gap separates marketing teams and cosmetic chemists, who seek the most stable, most pleasant, sweetest smelling cream, from biologists and dermatologists studying true skin requirements. I hoped to produce items I wanted as a shopper, items missing from shelves.

I expected a casual side project. I imagined a handful of orders packed on weekends. Hence eight bottles in batch one.

Stratia started in your kitchen, and by 2018 a first run of eight bottles had grown to 1,300 made in one day. Everything is still blended and made inside your own building at 2600 South Santa Fe Avenue in Los Angeles. What does holding production in house offer you

My kitchen held the first Stratia, with its small chemistry setup, and with growth I simply enlarged the laboratory again and again. I blended, filled and mailed all orders alone from my apartment, so fixed costs stayed tiny. Lacking backers or guides for next steps, I guessed my way toward larger output that preserved quality and safety.

Making our goods ourselves feels like a gift. It grants complete oversight of sourcing, routines and quality checks. It allows agility, so after a surprise sellout we can restock after a few days. It also lets visitors view exactly where their skincare originates, since production shares walls with the entire staff.

It also holds pricing where I prefer. Self formulation and self manufacture, plus attention to studies rather than fads, allows potent skincare at prices people can manage.

In 2018 you said a vitamin C serum, shared with fans a year and a half before it was ready, showed you not to talk about products in development. The current C plus C Serum pairs 15 percent vitamin C with CoQ10, and Stratia releases one or two products a year. What does a formula pass through first

That serum humbled me. I shared news long before I grasped the compounding hurdles, and countless issues can arise between concept and jar. Now I stay quiet about projects until launch nears.

It starts with play. I keep subscriptions to several research journals and watch for fresh findings or materials that might inspire a cream. Building a possible base in a spreadsheet ranks among my favorite tasks, then mixing trials at my small bench. That corner is my comfort zone. Next arrive many prototypes, then testing by volunteers. Roughly a thousand people have joined that pool.

Our cadence stays intentional. The central aim is to craft items without current equivalents. Where fine, affordable options already exist, I doubt I might add anything special. A launch happens only when I judge the product good.

You built Stratia from very meager savings, became profitable in the second month and reached 2 million dollars in sales by 2019. In November 2021 you accepted investment from Fable, the investment arm of Natura and Co. Why accept a partner you did not need

Fundraising was never required. Profits began in month two. Over years we declined opportunities, including big chains asking to carry us, because I refused outside pressure on formulas or release timing.

Later I sought counsel on operations rather than intuition. I had constructed everything through trial and error, and an expanding staff merited more than hunches.

Marketing followed the same path. Expansion came through personal recommendation, posts on Reddit and Instagram from users. We surely will avoid relying fully on Facebook ads. Companies seek advice on Reddit promotion, and I reply, “Don’t, don’t try it.” Redditors dislike pitches. Only plain candor succeeds, and though that phrase sounds like branding, I truly mean it: full belief in product quality and full openness with shoppers.

Daily oiling now has clearer limits beside standard minoxidil

Your shelf does not need a clear out, yet the choice between a medicinal lotion and a scented oil looks more defined. Two older trials set rosemary against 2% minoxidil, while later work examined peptides, low dose oral minoxidil and regenerative care. The feel came into focus around the June 2026 guide and a 90 day trial shared before 10 September 2026.

In 2015 Panahi and colleagues assigned 100 people with androgenetic alopecia to rosemary oil or 2% minoxidil across six months. Hair counts rose clearly from the start in each arm, with no meaningful gap between the arms. Itch on the scalp appeared more often with minoxidil, at 44.4% compared with 15% for rosemary, and dandruff appeared more often with minoxidil, at 32.2% compared with 7.5% for rosemary.

In 2020 Nasirian and colleagues assigned 60 participants to 2% rosemary oil or 2% minoxidil across 24 weeks. Count increased 10% with rosemary and 13% with minoxidil, at p equals 0.12. The near result counts, and the strength counts too. The studies tested 2% minoxidil, not the 5% preparation common among adults, so matching the lower dose does not show sameness with present usual dosing.

The latest rosemary result combines the plant with lavender and a control arm. In 2025 Patel and colleagues assigned 90 participants to rosemary-lavender oil, a peptide preparation or control across 90 days. The rosemary-lavender group raised hair growth rate by 57.73% against control at p less than 0.0001. The same group raised thickness by 68.70% and density by about 32% against control, while shedding dropped by more than 40%.

Bench science suggests one possible route. In 2013 Murata and colleagues observed rosemary leaf extract block 5-alpha reductase by 82.4% at 200 ug per mL and 94.6% at 500 ug per mL in vitro. Finasteride blocked 81.9% in the same test. Activity in glass does not foretell activity on skin.

Peptides remain lower in the evidence root system. A phase 2A study of PP405, a peptide that activates hair follicle stem cells, found statistically significant regrowth at eight weeks in 78 patients. A telogen effluvium study placed 45 subjects aged 18 to 45 years in three sets of 15 for 90 days, assessing Capilia longa combinations, cytokine and peptide combinations, and redensyl with aminexil at 2 mL once daily. Participant counts are small, tracking is brief and recipes differ.

Low dose oral minoxidil is shifting from private practice toward common standards. A shared global view on starting and tracking use looked sharp enough to take 4th place as a poster at the 2024 American Academy of Dermatology Annual Meeting. It noted daily amounts of 0.625 to 2.5 mg for adolescent females, 0.625 to 5 mg for adult females, and 1.25 to 5 mg for adolescent and adult males. Benefit is generally demonstrated between 3 to 6 months. The advice rests on expert consensus because larger trials are limited. A pooled review of studies found platelet rich plasma significantly lifted hair count and density versus controls. “Regenerative therapies like PRP have become a reassuring part of how we meet early hair loss, because they borrow the body’s own healing signals,” said Dr. Lindsay Bordone, MD, FAAD, dermatologist at Columbia University and the American Academy of Dermatology.

For a slow routine, the tradeoff stays simple. Rosemary requests daily attention and patience, with less itch in these trials but no proof of durable benefit after stopping. It remains unclear if store oils match standardized preparations on the skin or match minoxidil 5% over 12 months.

I built that room because no one else had. I understood what it meant to lack confidence in how I looked, in my skin in particular. I lived with severe acne. I lived with a nevus mole that changed how I saw myself. Then in training I saw practitioners grow uneasy around deeper skin tones, above all around acne and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Training was thin, so people looked away.

A treatment room teaches slowness. Marks soften over time. Melanin rich skin can answer pressure with added darkening. I learned to observe, to lighten pressure, to hold routines plain enough that clients stayed with them. If I cannot give visible results, life changing results for people, there goes my brand. Those years gave me that line. It still orders how I compose a formula, results ahead, then price second as I develop it.

It means results ahead, then price second. I just have never softened what I put in my products. You have said your mother took you to Greece nearly every summer to see your Yiayia and Papou, and that the brand name grew from those monastery visits. What did those places show you about care that San Francisco would later need.

My mom and I would travel nearly every summer back to Greece to see my Yiayia and Papou. Those visits remain the source of so much for me. The monasteries we entered felt plain and still. Objects were shaped by hand. Beauty seemed to rise from attention, rather than from owning more.

I entered esthetics without really planning to become an esthetician, yet still drawn to that witchy world I grew up with. Plants lived in our home practice. My grandmother understood what to steep and what to press and what to keep. So when I later set up my studio in San Francisco, I sought that same mood. A compact room. An unhurried routine. Formulas that felt shaped, not factory made.

I lean toward species that are plentiful and vigorous on our partner farms instead of fashionable or far flung species. That preference shapes each recipe. When a plant prospers close by without coercion, it already belongs to that ground and season. That aliveness registers in aroma, hue and touch.

Vigorous and plentiful plants are often the strongest allies for our skin, and working with them restores the Earth instead of depleting it. It allows us to remain close to regional cultivators rather than pursuing a scarce import from far away. We can stand in the planting and walk between rows. We understand its cultivation and harvest moment. We carry it raw to the Barn and complete the handling ourselves. That proximity keeps us accountable. If a species falters locally, we avoid pushing it. We pause or we select another plant eager to grow.

You describe slow farmed beauty and plant medicine made for the skin. When Laurel Skin began, what promise did you set about what belongs in the bottle and what never will

Whole plant, without apology. That remains the vow. Fully whole plant organic skincare with intact plant chemistry, cultivated slowly and prepared in house. I hold that every plant carries medicinal value, so naming a favorite feels rather like naming a favorite child. Yet our handling counts as much as our selection. Clean sourcing alone cannot replace relationship.
